Internet Safety Notes 2/5/2013
if you do not recognize the sender of an email, do not open it until you know more about it.
1 - google the from-user and the subject line and see if other people have gotten this email and reported it as SPAM.
2 - if you do open the email - do not click on any links or open any attachment. Hover over the link with the mouse - and read the URL that will be displayed. If it doesn't look like the destination that is implied in the email - do not click that.
3. Do not use the "administrator" or Administrator credentials when surfing the net. This is a complex subject because most Home Users are admins on their own systems. It is also pretty draconian to live by this rule because your are severly restricted in what you can do to your system.
4. NEVER click on a link on a website that says something like "Send this link to a friend". They collect these email Ids you type in and they sell them to others as a cross-connected database. The database can be sliced-and-diced any number of ways to associate user information with other user information. The uses for this analysis includes SPAM emails and other markeing things that the world just doesn't need to know about YOU.
Another very serious issue with this is that you have now disclosed some personal infomration about the "friend" you are "sending" to - and that person can't prevent that. Now they are on someone's spam list as an active, real live human out "there". Just try to get removed from a mailing list! (See next tip!)
5. NEVER click those links at the end of SPAM emails that say "Remove me from this mailing list"! When you do so, you might get removed from that list, (because the politicians have written a law requiring them to remove you), but you might also get put on another list - of real live humans that reply to such things!
6. Check out Netiquette on Wikipedia
